Thesis on Early Start in English Teaching
With the influence of globalization, English has become the most widely used Language. People are communicating in different ways more often worldwide. More countries are paying increasingly attention on English teaching. I believe the early start in English teaching will be the most effective major trend. I’ll clarify my points of view from the following aspects:
Firstly, there have been evidence and data showing that many countries have started teaching English in earlier grades at school. For example, “since 2011, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam have been introducing English from Grade 4. Also in 2011, Japan introduced English in the primary stage, and, in 2012, Dubai introduced English in the KG stage instead of Grade 1.”(http://tesol.institute/) For those non-English speaking countries, English has been chosen as a compulsory subject being taught in schools. The governments attach importance to English teaching, because a common language can boost a better communication on Economy, politics and culture among countries, thus creating more opportunities for people to take advantage of the world resource and strengthen mutual understanding.
Secondly, starting learning a language from early ages has been proven to have both physiological and psychological advantages. Physiologically, children are believed to boast more advantages for gaining a new language than adults. The critical period hypothesis is believed by many linguists all over the world. “This hypothesis rests on the assumption that the age-related effects seen in L2 studies are the result of maturational changes in brain structures that are used to learn and/or to process language. For example, it has been hypothesized that as the brain matures, it becomes less "plastic" and that lost neural plasticity impedes L2 learning.” (e.g., Scovel, 1988; Patkowski, 1980, 1990). Therefore, early age learning is important for children to take good use of their critical period. Besides, children haven’t fully developed their native language system. They are more flexible, sensitive and less being affected by their native language on pronunciation and intonations. Psychologically, children haven’t fully developed a set of high self-esteem system. This means they are dauntless to speak out a new language and less afraid of making mistakes. Those traits provide children more opportunities to develop a new language naturally no matter in classes or activities in school or after school.
Thirdly, gaining more than one language for people indeed contributes to a better development no matter in terms of individuals or from the perspective of a country. Gaining a language not only means a new system of language, but another way of thinking system, which has been acknowledged worldwide. People are able to become more understanding and open-minded towards different races and cultures. Meanwhile, they get more opportunities for improving on studying, working, living from different countries. Countries are being able to tackle problems easier and develop better in the process of more frequent communication .
Therefore, from the perspective of evidence and data existed, advantages for young children to gain a new language and benefits being acknowledged to gain a new language by individuals and countries, I believe early start in English teaching will become a major trend worldwide.
