As a Chinese graduate having received five-year undergraduate education of architecture, I have been deeply aware of the social problems brought by the rapid growth of population and the blind fierce urbanization. And these issues cannot be just limited to the level of architecture, urban design or urban planning. Although the subjects are divided by different dimensions, an actual problem often involves a broader area without a clear boundary. I have a professional architecture background in China a professional urban planning background in Holland, but what I really want is to integrate them together in my mind, so that I can link one with the other more judiciously. When I put forward these ideas to my teacher, he recommended me the human settlement of Leuven University. The understanding of Leuven University and the human settlement itself confirms me for a further  study in your school. If I have the good fortune to study there, I will try my best to perform best. On the one hand can achieve mastery of my knowledge learnt before through a comprehensive study of this subject, and furthermore, improve my knowledge. On the other hand, I can fill the gaps of my previous knowledge system by learning new knowledge about technique level and especially about the social aspect in the developing countries. Compared with the pursuit of the architectural form that strives continually to be different, I prefer to make effort to apply my knowledge in solve the problems in undeveloped areas, and so I believe that it is a right decision to go to Leuven University for further study of Human Settlement.

With the responsibility for the society, in the first grade of my university I founded the Volunteer Association of the School of Architecture with several classmates, and I was the first president. I never stopped the activities as a volunteer when I was in school, and I insist to support education in some undeveloped areas in each summer, so I have achieved the awards from the school and the government. In my opinion, the architecture, urban design and urban planning not only need technique and art, and they mostly need the responsibility for society.  Activities as a volunteer made me more deeply understand the responsibility, and I have also understood some social problems.

When I was in grade three, I was interested in the unique folk house form called “cave” in the poor northwest area in China, and I took part in the “innovation cup” essay competition organized by the school. My paper “Protection, utilization and replacement of traditional folk house form of impoverished area in current society” discusses the folk house form which is low-priced, environmentally friendly and adapted to the local way of living. It aims to measure the possibility for the folk house form to go on remaining in modern society, although it is initiated from thousands years ago. It also discusses how to improve this living pattern to make it adapted to modern living pattern. I did this research not only because of the protection and nostalgia of history, and mostly because that the modern living pattern has already caused some social problems in the local areas. However because of the limited ability at that time, although I did some analysis and made some discussions, I only provided some solutions for the single building. This article gained the wining prize of the school, and was published in a journal. But for me, it is an unfinished project, and I hope to complete it through continuous learning. Of course, my goal is not only limited to the only one region of northwest Loess Plateau, and I hope to apply what I learn to find suitable solutions for the areas that need help.

In my grade four, because of the good achievement that was in the top ten percent I have the fortune to learn urban planning in Avans Hogeschool as an exchange student in Holland for half a year. When I arrived in Holland, I felt misfit about lots of things, and the European educational forms had a large difference with China’s, but the teachers did not to mind taking the trouble to teach me, and I kept working hard, and I finally became adaptable and got good scores for my graduation project. I realize that both architectural design and urban planning can not only focus on the design, and the rational design method like “analysis - conclusion - design” can provide answers targeting social problems. This study experience benefited me a lot, and it made me realize that the roles that the urban design and urban planning played in society development in Europe are different from that in China. Chinese cultural background with the study experience in Holland makes me have my own unique views about many problems, and I can handle a problem with multi-angle analysis.

Outstanding professionalism, diversified educational background, the passion for the social issues relating to architecture and urban and a sense of social responsibility make me believe that I am a suitable candidate of the Human Settlement project of Leuven University.

What’s more, after half a year’s study of Dutch, my Dutch reached the B2 level, so I believe it will make my further study in Leuven University as if the fish had got into the water again

Besides outstanding professional achievements, what’s more valuable is that this student has a strong sense of social responsibility. Her paper about “cave” reflects her outstanding professional accomplishment and her attention to social issues. In today’s fickle social environment, it’s more valuable for her to keep calm, not to drift with the circumstances, to analyze problems and to provide her own solutions. Although her article is still not perfect from a professional perspective, this article shows a third grade student’s ability to apply professional knowledge and her serious attitude which I really appreciate. This article also achieved the winning prize of the school and was published in a journal.

In addition, what must be mentioned is that this student was the founder of the Volunteers Association of the Architectural School and served as its leader. Through organizing and taking part in various activities of the Volunteers Association, her ability was improved, and that also motivated other students of the school to take part in the volunteer activities. Various activities improved the cohesion of the students of the school, optimized the atmosphere of the school and also made her have excellent organizational skills and improved her ability to handle things. Acting under the principle of “Not craving vanity, to help people in need”, the association is widely popular, and it has been operated well till now as a valuable wealth of the school.

Because of her outstanding performance, she and other five students went to Holland for a further study as exchange students and gained good achievements. Since she came back we have more communication both at my class “Green architecture” and after class. From her unique views to problems, her independent ability to think and her initiative to explore issues, it can be seen that the half a year’s study brought her a lot of benefits.

Overseas study experience has widened her vision, and made her views things from a broader level with more mature thought. Of course, in addition to the improvement of the professional aspects, her English level has already been improved. Considering this student’s professional ability and her interests in exploring social issues related to urban and architecture, I recommend her to go to Leuven University for a further study of the Human Settlement. I believe that this is a right choice for her, and I am sure that she is the right person for this program.
